Is there any pre-camp orientation or training?
There is a Camp Leader Orientation during the first week each May in Long Beach. The camp is accessible virtually year-round for individuals who would like to visit in advance (weekend camping is available with reservations). There is usually a workparty the second Saturday of June in which units are encourage to attend and assist in preparing the camp for summer.
Does our Troop have to attend all of the campfires?
The campfires are provided by the Tribe of Tahquitz to offer an evening activity, but units should feel free to participate or not participate in the camp programs that suit their own particular wants and needs. We strongly encourage attendance at the Sunday welcome campfire and the Friday awards campfire.
What about special dietary needs?
In many cases, individuals or entire units with special dietary needs can be easily accommodated with some advance notice. Some items are not always available from our food suppliers, such as many kosher foods, but we are always able to provide storage or aid to preparation.
Can our Troop have family visitors during the week?
Only Scouts and Leaders registered in your unit may stay overnight in your campsite. There is limited lodging and outdoor camping availability for families in the Family Cabin area (across Highway 38). Troops are encouraged to invite families to attend the Friday evening awards campfire. Extra food for guests can be provided to either Patrol Style or Central Feed units (you will be billed for extra meals when your unit checks out), but arrangements must be made in advance.
How can troop leaders be reached while they are at camp?
The camp phone number for emergencies is (909) 794-2932. This phone is only in the camp office, so only messages can be relayed to troop campsites. Many cellular phone services get good reception in the Barton Flats area.
